Do We Need Insurance Products?

It has always been known as a grudge purchase product because no one wakes up in the morning excited and looking forward to purchasing an insurance cover. But damn, we need it in our personal and business lives. Insurance products protect us, our families, and our businesses from financial difficulty. It is meant to reduce financial stress and allow us to focus on quicker recovery from the loss of loved ones, assets, and valuable properties. A grudge buy is something we need or must do, but is the last thing we want to do with our time or money. I am sure we all dread the idea or thought of talking to an insurance Salesperson, yet we know very well the consequences of not taking sufficient insurance coverage. The history of insurance in South Africa dates back to December 1835 when the first South African insurance company, Zuid-Afrikaansche Brand en Levensversekering Maatschappij was founded in Cape Colony. A decade later this was followed by the formation of the South African Mutual Life Assurance Society in May 1845, which was later called Old Mutual. As they say, the rest is history. Under the broad umbrella of Short term and Long Term insurance, the industry has matured tremendously over the years. A number of products and items have found their place in the list of items of the insured. In recent times technology has disrupted the insurance industry. With different insurance categories and classes of insurance businesses, it will be difficult to estimate the number of people insured in the county unless one breaks it down by insurance classes or categories. In the Healthcare category, it is estimated that over 80 percent of the South African population is uninsured.    Some of the statistics provided by the Financial Service Conduct Authority (FSCA) can give you some perspective on the state of insurance in South Africa, especially when focusing on the update of this grudge purchase. About 42% of adult South Africans reported having funeral cover in 2021, and on the other hand, 10% have life insurance, 11% have physical asset insurance, and 8% have health insurance. Some 60% of South Africans report having an insurance product, When Funeral Cover is excluded, the share of South Africans with insurance drops to only 19% Insurance penetration in South Africa, as measured using premiums as a percentage of GDP, was 13.7% in 2020. Funeral cover is by far the most subscribed insurance product category in South Africa. One fundamental reason for the growing need for funeral cover is seeing how expensive a funeral can be. With the economy weakening and the cost of living soaring, people need to find an affordable way to afford to pay for a dignified funeral. Paying a small amount of funeral premium will mean that in the time of need, you can access funds to send off loved ones in a dignified manner. Whether we see it as a grudge or not, insurance is surely going to be increasingly in demand in all aspects of our lives. The standard of living and economic conditions in the country are not helping either. For consumers, getting used to insurance purchases might help them to develop much-needed knowledge of different types of insurance categories and products, as well as their benefits. Nothing is more painful than buying the wrong insurance product and only to realize at the time of claim that the insurance cover was not appropriate or sufficient for the intended need. Emerging businesses and entrepreneurs are not spared from this dilemma of insurance purchases. The event of July 2021 and ever-so-threatening floods and other force majeure circumstances have proven in more ways than one that better be insured than not. Consumers do need insurance education so that they can make the right and informed decision about the so-called grudge purchase. Medical Insurance vs. Medical Aid: Making the Right Choice for Your Family

We understand that navigating the world of healthcare coverage in South Africa can be confusing. With so many options available, how do you know which one is right for your family? Two terms that are often used interchangeably but are actually very different are Medical Aid and Medical Insurance (or Health Insurance). In this, article we will break down the differences between the two in simple terms. Our goal is to empower you with the knowledge you need to make the best financial and healthcare decisions for your loved ones, ensuring peace of mind when you need it most. What is Medical Aid? Medical Aid (often referred to as a Medical Scheme) is a comprehensive form of healthcare coverage. It is regulated by the Council for Medical Schemes and operates on a non-profit basis. The primary goal of a medical aid is to pay for your actual medical expenses, such as hospital stays, surgeries, and treatments, directly to the healthcare providers. One of the most important features of medical aid is that it is legally required to cover a specific set of conditions known as Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs). This includes 26 chronic conditions and any life-threatening emergencies, ensuring that members always have access to essential care regardless of their chosen plan. Medical aids operate on a principle called “community rating.” This means that everyone on the same plan pays the same monthly contribution, regardless of their age or current health status. While medical aid offers extensive protection, it is generally the more expensive option, making it difficult for some families to afford. What is Medical Insurance? Medical Insurance, also known as Health Insurance, is a different type of product. It is regulated by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) and is offered by for-profit insurance companies. Instead of paying your actual medical bills directly to the hospital or doctor, medical insurance pays out a fixed cash amount when a specific insured event occurs. For example, if you are hospitalized, the insurance might pay you a set amount of money per day. You can then use this money to help cover your medical bills or replace lost income while you are recovering. Medical insurance is designed to be a more affordable alternative to medical aid. It focuses heavily on day-to-day medical needs, such as visits to the general practitioner (GP), basic dentistry, optometry, and acute medication. It also provides limited cover for accidents and emergencies. Because it does not have to cover the expensive Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs), the monthly premiums are significantly lower. Which Option is Right for You? Choosing between medical aid and medical insurance depends entirely on your family’s specific needs, your health status, and your budget. You should consider Medical Aid if: You have a family with ongoing medical needs or chronic conditions. If you want the peace of mind that major hospital bills and surgeries will be covered comprehensively, medical aid is the safest route. It is the best choice for those who can comfortably afford the higher monthly premiums. You should consider Medical Insurance if: You are looking for an affordable way to access private healthcare for everyday needs, like seeing a doctor when you have the flu or getting basic dental work done. It is an excellent option for young, healthy individuals, lower-income earners, or as a supplementary cover if you already have a basic hospital plan. It is important to remember that Medical Insurance is not a substitute for Medical Aid. If you have a serious illness that requires a long hospital stay, relying solely on medical insurance could leave you with a significant financial shortfall.
